We are in Laos, a country in Southeast Asia that borders Burma, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. His name is currently Lao People's Democratic Republic.

This sparsely populated nation witnessed and victimized the greatest bombing known to man, information that went unnoticed thanks to the media and, in the opinion of some, misnamed Vietnam War.

A little history: during the 18th century Laos was a French protectorate and although there were some attempts at independence, this would not come until years later.

During the WWII was occupied by the japanese empire. It was after this occupation and supported by the Vietnamese nationalists that Laos proclaimed its total independence from France although they were still under a monarchical regime.

Later in 1951 a communist independence movement born in North Vietnam and invaded Laos, which resulted in a Civil War.

Later thanks to Geneva agreements From 1955 to 1959, peace reigned in the country and the territory was divided and the forces were even unified, but after this period, the war between the forces of Viet Minh and Pathet Lao (communists) against the forces of royal army of Laoshe continued.

After a brief period in which there was a coalition government, the tensions of the United States with the neighboring country, Vietnam, dragged Laos to the Second Indochina War.

Subsequently, there were some American attempts to use the Lao population against Vietnam in the well-known Operation White Star, in which they trained the royal army of Laos to fight against the communists, always in absolute secrecy.

US operations in Laos with the aim of cutting off supply routes used by the Vietnam army totaled more than half a million. American aviation wreaked havoc between civilians and military without distinction.

More of 2 million tons of bombs were dropped on the country during this war that was silenced by the media by the CIA, since Laos was supposedly conflict neutral, as in other countries in the area that could become communists during 1964 and 1973.

It is currently estimated that there are 80 million unexploded explosives scattered across the country. This means that around 100% of the towns in the province there are artifacts that have not been detonated.

Laos has the dubious honor of still being the country in the world that has suffered the most bombings per inhabitant.
